Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge Tour

    

What is something that will contain 200 million pounds of structural steel, 450,000 cubic yards of concrete and has an expected lifespan of 150 years? The New Oakland-San Francisco Bay Bridge! Embark on a chance of a lifetime on a wonderful boat-guided tour of the magestic bridge, currently under construction, that we all have heard so much about in the news or in our classes.

We will be leaving from the Hearst Mining Circle on Friday, Steptember 10th, at 11:30am. The tour will last approximately 2 hours. Participants are required to wear long pants, as well as hiking boots or work/construction boots. ABSOLUTELY NO ATHLETIC SHOES OR STREET SHOES ALLOWED!

1st General Meeting Spring 2010

Our 1st general meeting of the semester is this Thursday, September 9th @ 5pm in 502 DavisCome listen to one of our very own students, Senior CEE Justin Shih, talk about his experiences with Environmental Sustainability in various countries around the world! You will also get the opportrtunity to eat yummy food while hanging out with cool civil engineers. Find out more about how to get involved with the CEE community, including becoming an ASCE intern. We look forward to seeing you there!

Free food for members, $2 for non-members. We will also be tabling at Davis this week on Wednesday and Thursday, so be sure to sign up for or renew your Cal ASCE membership!

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT 1

Have you ever wanted to learn more about the business side of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Industry? Sign up for CE 98: Professional Development Certification I, and learn what it truly takes to land an internship or a job!

The objective of this course is to introduce the students to professional aspects of CEE and to help students develop personal, communication, teambuilding, planning and leadership skills that are valued by the CEE industry. This course is the first component of the two-part decal requirement for the CEE Professional Development Certification Program. Upon completion of the program requirements, the student will receive a certificate indicating an effort was made towards becoming a leader in today's society.

The seminar will take place on Wednesdays from 6-7pm, and will be lead by Cal graduates who will provide valuable advice on how to jumpstart your career! To sign up for the course, attend the first day of class and we will give you a CCN. Berkeley CEE's, are you ready for an incredible Fall 2010?

Whether you are new to Cal or are a returning member, join CalASCE as we start off the year with a host of exciting activities ranging from a BBQ at Davis Hall to a tour of the Bay Bridge. The membership fee for new students to the College of Engineering are waived. For returning members, membership will be $8 for the Fall semester, and $15 for the entire academic year. Internship Opportunity


There is a part-time Technical Internship position open with Northgate Environmental Management, Inc.

Northgate Environmental Environmental Management, Inc. is one of the nation's leading experts in identifying, assessing, remediating and restoring the value of contaminated properties and other natural resources. They offer a range of Environmental, Geotechnical, Explosive Ordanance Disposal, and Hydrogeological services to both public and private entities.

Qualifications for the internship include:
• College student with at least two years of applicable coursework in a science or engineering field
• Experience with MS Excel, Word, and Access
• AutoCAD and GIS experience a plus
• Ability to succeed in a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment
• Must be dependable

Intern duties may include, but are not limited to:
• Data entry and analysis
• Data quality review
• Updating spreadsheets
• Assisting with production and distribution of project documents
• Photocopying, faxing, and filing
• Errands, as requested
